How to get your Spanish Digital Certificate through FNCT (CERES)

Thinking about working in Spain when you have a NIE or are a EU Citizen? You just might need a Social Security Number. Watch the ‘how to’ video below on how I got my Electronic Certificate which allows you to generate an SSN. It might seem overwhelming but it’s pretty straightforward once you know where everything is.

Normally you would need a TIE (Foreigner Card) in order to get a Cl@ve account – but you don’t need to, you can get a ‘Certificato Digital’ or Digital Certificate.

The video below walks you through the steps.

More details!

How you can get your SSN without having a TIE:

  1. Download the Configurator software
  2. Receive the Email request with the Code from FNCT.
  3. Organise your Appointment (phone/online) to verify your identify in person at a government office.
  4. Receive your verified Digital Certificate and install into the Configurator
  5. Create your SSN.

Other experiences

  • Arrived and it wasn’t at the right office: Though they seem to be frequently co-located.
  • Office said it couldn’t have been done without a TIE (the card): Insist that it can be, and clarify that you want the FNCT verification not the Cl@ve (as the Cl@ve requires a TIE)
  • Didn’t have the FNCT Code for the appointment: They Office luckily rebooked the appointment to a later date. If you’re a tech whiz you might have been able to do it on your phone.

Already have your TIE?

If you have a TIE, you should look at using Cl@ve as you don’t need to do an identify verification check at an office.

Glossary

CERES is (CERtificación ESpañola) which is managed by Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT); and literally translated is the national money and stamp factory; though they do a lot more today.
